How To Call Mexico From The US: A Step by Step Guide
You may have family or business in Mexico and still not know how to call Mexico from the US. So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the Mexican phone number you have.
- Dial the exit code– Start dialing with 011, which tells your phone carrier that you’re calling outside the United States
- Put in the Mexico country code – Ok, the carrier knows you’re dialing out, but not where to. Next enter 52 into your phone to inform the system you want to call through to Mexico.
- Ignore the trunk code – The portion of the phone number that begins with 01, 045, or 044 is the trunk code, and you’d only need it if you were calling a Mexican phone number from within Mexico. It’s a feature we don’t use in the US, but they do in Mexico.
- Dial the rest of the number – Dial the rest of the full phone number that you want to call, including the 2 or 3 digit area code followed by the local phone number.
Follow all of these steps carefully to call a phone number in Mexico without complications or issues.
Before you start, do remember to check that your phone is able to call internationally. If it isn’t you won’t be connected, because your phone can’t get connect to an international connection.

The 011 tells the phone system that you are calling outside the United States. The 52 says that you’re trying to connect with Mexico, skip the 044 trunk code, then 722 is the Toluca area code and the 9876-543 is the local phone number that you’re trying to reach.
If you were to call the same local number in Morelia instead you would type in:
011-52-443-9876-543
Is it different to dial a cellphone number in Mexico?
To call Mexico from the US when the person has a cell phone, it’s really simple. In essence, it’s the same process using any phone approved to make international calls.
- Start with the exit code – Begin by typing 011 into your phone to signal the phone system that you’re making an international call.
- Put in the country code for Mexico – Dial 52, the country code for Mexico. The entry code got you out of the US system and into the international, this tells the system to route your call to Mexico.
- Ignore the trunk code – After you put in the exit and entry codes, remember to NOT dial the trunk code, 044 or 045 typically. The trunk code is only for calling one number in Mexico from another, not for international callers.
- Type in the area code – Dial the corresponding area code for the broad location you want to call. In Mexico it’s the first 2 or 3 digits of the phone number.
- Put in the rest of the phone number – Type in the remaining digits of the number given to complete the call.
That will get you connected with someone who has a cell phone so long as you are using a phone approved for international phone calls.
