Most people in the US know how to dial United States area codes most of the time. However, the Internet is global, and so we may appeal to faithful readers outside of the United States who need that information.
When dialing into the US from Canada, the process works more or less the same. Dial 1 and then the ten digit US number, and the call should connect.
If calling the United States from elsewhere in the world, on the other hand, first the caller has to exit their own system. The numerical code to do that changes depending on where in the world the caller is. In Europe, for instance, dial 00 to get out of the European network, then 1 to get into the US/Canada network, and then the ten digit number.
What if you were only given a seven digit number by your US contact? Well, then you have to find the area code within the US that the seven digit number belongs to. Add those three numbers before the seven digits. So, for instance, if someone gave you the number 123-4567 and you know they’re located in New Orleans, you could look up the area code for New Orleans. It would then come out to 00 to get out of the local system, 1 to get into the US/Canada system, 504 to get into the area of New Orleans, then 123-4567, and the call would connect.
Controlling Telecommunications Costs
If you’re running a business, making a multitude of business calls, then VoIP systems become necessary. Old style phone systems don’t allow control of international calls, but VoIP systems do. The business owners or managers can decide where they want their employees to call and during what times. Given that cyberattacks aim to run up company phone bills as a method of scamming, this has become increasingly important in the modern era.
